New Masters of Digital Design Present Their Work
For a second year, the Master Digital Design of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is seeping some of the best talent in the field back onto the job market. The occasion is marked with the launch of the programme’s alumni page and a week-long exhibition.
During the first week of July, students of the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences are exhibiting some of their most outstanding work. At the event, called Outburst Amsterdam, the Master Digital Design has its own dome where students welcome visitors to test some of their designs and explain more about the thought-process behind their work.
They come from all corners of the world, have a variety of professional backgrounds, and are at different stages in their careers. The one thing this group has in common is that, for a year, they were enrolled in a digital design master’s programme sprinkled with some of the best Dutch design practices.
I am sure that they will bring the same dedication to their future endeavours.
Course co-coordinators Gabriele Ferri and Paul Geurts couldn’t be prouder. “Their daily hard work in our studio has been a constant inspiration throughout the year,” says Ferri. “It’s been a real pleasure to work with them. And we say ‘work with’ because we no longer recognise them as students, but as colleagues.” Geurts adds: “I am sure that they will bring the same dedication to their future endeavours.”
This boutique degree welcomes 24 international students every year, chosen through a rigid selection process that includes portfolio reviews and interviews with potential candidate students.
During the academic period, these professionals work on real-life briefs from a range of companies and organisations which include Philips, VodafoneZiggo, the City of Amsterdam, World Wide Fund, and many more. Their projects reflect design challenges of the modern digital world and touch upon different technologies and fields – from VR to gaming; biofeedback to apps.
We see this Master's becoming the seeds of an international design network
Designers enrolled in the programme focus on processes and reflections that help them design consciously and make better decisions. They are entrusted with a balanced vision between people, profit, and planet.
“We see this Master's becoming the seeds of an international design network,” says Geurts.
Now that 48 international students have enjoyed the programme, the Master Digital Design is launching its alumni page. Visitors can browse through all profiles and filter by expertise and graduation year. The design of the page was once more at the hands of Momkai, which have also developed the programme’s brand identity and website. The page is available at www.masterdigitaldesign.com/alumni
The exhibition is open to visitors between Tuesday 2 July and Thursday 4 July between 12:00 and 16:00 (Wednesday until 19:00) at the faculty’s Amstel Campus (Wibautstraat 2-4). The programme is also holding a few other events, including a meetup, a campfire stories, and, of course, the graduation ceremony.
